Traveling long haul most likely means you’re having a stopover.. Lucky you! Just in case anyone’s wondering: Yes, I was being sarcastic! Being stuck in an airport for at least 2hrs can really drain the life out of anyone! Here are a couple of things to help you get through those hours and make time pass in a flash!
1: Find a Resteraunt and Eat
Why not? You’re hungry, and eating also fills you up for the foil wrapped meal we get that let’s face it, we all dread! Dine gourmet and experience local cuisine.. Well.. from the 4 walls of the airport
2: Get a Massage
Being stuck on a plane for an extended period of time can be tough on your circulation and state of mind. Release all of the tension with a nice and peaceful massage. You might also want to check in with your credit card company to see what they offer in terms of travel discounts. Some banks often include access to 3rd party lounges and massages.
3: Get into a lounge!
After being on that flight for how ever many hours, the last thing you’re going to want to do is to sit around a whole bunch of people (probably on the floor) with nothing to see, do or experience. Have a look at your airport’s website for independently owned lounges that you can check-in to. I’ve done this a few times myself and I must say, it’s a true life saver! You’ll usually receive access to a buffet, drinks and a SHOWER! This also helps if you’ve got a headache and just want to get away from the whole “airport” scene. This would also be a good time to check in with your bank regarding lounge access/benefits.
Who doesn’t love the benefits of duty free? Shopping for that discounted pair of noise cancelling headphones, new phone, neck pillow or chocolate is always great! At duty free, anything is possible! Some duty free stores also have an option for you to order online and request that your purchases are left for you upon arrival if it’s something you don’t want to take half way across the world with you!
5: Join the WiFi and surf!
I’m not going to lie, there’s not much I would do without social media (#firstworldproblems) so it’s nice to get online and connect with your friends from your destination. I know I could scroll through my instagram, facebook and twitter feed for probably an hour depending on how much I’m “in the mood”. More Importantly, If there’s that tv show or song you want to download before your next flight, not a better time to do so! Face-timing or skyping family from the airport is also a good pass-timer!
Booking Stopovers On Purpose: If you’re travelling for an extended period of time, chances are you’ll be stopping over in an iconic destination (as we’ve discussed before). You may want to further plan your stopover and experience the city you’ll stay in. Most airlines have some sort of “stopover” information on their website and we definitely recommend checking it out! Airlines such as Etihad Airways can organise package deals for stopovers in Abu Dhabi that are under a day including golf and pool access or a longer 2 night stop that allows you to choose from a range of hotels in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. You can visit their stopover information page here.
